TYPE + PLACE BRANDING
Type + Place Branding | Fall 2023
Class: Typography 3
Professor: Anna Jacobs and
Piper Schuerman
This Project was completed as a final for a senior level Typography class. The goal was to use typography to promote and brand any landmark or location of our choice. The project was self directed and is comprised of intentional brand assets, detailed illustration, and extensive brand application through merchandise and local collaboration

Context
I was inspired to do place branding for the Duomo in Florence because I studied abroad there and walked past the cathedral every day. The history and design of this building was so interesting to me but the current branding did not do it justice. My goal was to update the branding of the cathedral in a way that was bold yet delicate like the architecture but still contained the nod to traditional Italian style.

Typography and Colors
"The Seasons" was used for headers and the Logo; "Snell Roundhand" was used for secondary headers and detail text; and "Source Sans Variable" was used for body text. For colors, I selected straight from the building and surrounding area keeping with a neutral and soft color scheme.
Logo
The illustrated logo has three variations for different sizes so that detail is not lost when the logo is sized down. The Type based logo also has variations for different sizes and settings

Illustraition
I created illustrations for this project to add a delicate touch to the brand. The illustrations were uses as imagery, icons, maps, and more.

Photography
Most of the photography used in this project was taken by the blogger "Along Dusty Roads." I wanted to use photography from one photographer to create a cohesive feel in the brand. I did not have access to the Duomo to take my own photography so I chose to spotlight this photographer because I absolutely love their work.

For the Microsite I created the home screen for the cathedral. Because the main use of the Duomo is now visits, the main purpose of the site is encouraging users to visit with tours, maps, images, and easy to access information.

Application
For brand application I created tickets, a coffee table book, post cards, and jewelry
